Networking. Some think of it as schmoozing or kissing up, but really it’s just having a conversation with someone. It’s being at those family friends’ holiday parties and actually talking to the adults and not playing with their parents in your search for companionship.
That old guy with the way oversized glasses and a few strands of hair left in his comb over, yeah he could actually be pretty interesting and knowledgeable; hard to believe, I know.
-Be interested in the conversation and try to learn about the person, their career, and their company. DON’T ask for a job in the first 30 seconds of a conversation!
What’s next? After speaking with someone if you feel comfortable doing so and that it is appropriate you could ask several things, such as for their business card, if he/she knows of any job openings, or for an informational interview.

Some times, if I know someone is going to be at a party I will google them or their company for info so I can steer the conversation. Adults seem to be really impressed when you know even a little about their company or can talk aobut an news article you saw about their group.
How do I find out about my parents' friend who is a lawyer. I know he is going ot be at this holiday party I will have to go to and I have been thinkig more about going to law school.
Anonymous #2,
I think you should try Googling his name or finding out more about the firm that he works for. Then, when you see him in person, ask him more about it (questions like "What advice do you have for me, if I'm interested in becoming a lawyer?" "What can I do to prepare for law school?" "What do you like most about your job?"). That's going to help you figure out if going to law school is for you, and he might have some ideas of people looking for interns this summer (but don't ask him for a job! Ask if he knows anybody who's looking to hire entry-level undergraduate students).
If you'd like to ask me any more questions, feel free to email me at kemckenz@wustl.edu
Sincerely,
Katie
Also, feel free to talk to your parents about their friend. They already know him and can probably tell you a bit about what he does specifically
